Sotheby’s, the world’s oldest arts and luxury auction house, has announced its partnership with public health attorneys and the non-profit organization Sostento to auction its latest NFT collection through Sotheby’s Metaverse. The auction, called Gifted: The 140 Collection, is the “largest NFT charity auction in Sotheby’s history”, with all proceeds from Sostento.
The NFTs were originally introduced to Twitter in a donation of 140 NFTs to 140 random followers in June of this year. The recipients became known as “The Besties”. Now, 7 of those selected have decided to sell the full set of 7 NFTs and support Sostento’s healthcare professionals at the forefront of their efforts to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic and the opioid overdose crisis.
The NFT award comes on the heels of Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey selling the platform’s first tweet for $2.9 million in March 2021 as an NFT. Proceeds from the private sale have helped the response to Covid-19 in Africa.
In an announcement posted to Cointelegraph, Cassandra Hutton, Sotheby’s Global Head of Science and Popular Culture, said:
“It’s inspiring to work not only with an organization like Sostento, but also with a group of Besties who understand the importance of NFTs and use that power for a good cause.”
Sostento’s partners include Giving Block, which provides a platform for targeted charities, organizations, universities, and religious groups of all sizes to use and accept cryptocurrency.
According to Joe Aguada, CEO of Sostento, the proceeds from this sale will be processed by Giving Block and then “invested directly in our mission to help healthcare professionals save lives.”
