Jing’an District of Shanghai has started offering discount coupons based on blockchain.
Local news outlet Shine reported that the county will issue coupons through a WeChat microprogram run by the Jing’an Bureau of Culture and Tourism.
WeChat widgets are small sub-applications built into the WeChat ecosystem that offer various online services such as e-commerce, music, video streaming and translation.
The travel agency has integrated the blockchain into the WeChat micro-software to organize the number of coupons in circulation and the expiration date of each coupon, and to analyze how people use them. The gadget will send out new coupons every day.
Each blockchain-based coupon will range from 5 RMB ($ 0.73) to 60 RMB ($ 8.80).
Employees, students and other residents in the area will be able to receive vouchers with the WeChat micro-software. They can then exchange it for movies, theater performances and online courses.
Users will be able to redeem coupons on websites such as Hubei Cinema, IV Cinema, Majestic Theater and Shanghai-based online radio platform Ximalaya.
Tourism Bureau Director Chen Hong said they are also working with Ximalaya to encourage more people to use coupons to buy online courses and digital books as more people turn to the internet in search of entertainment during the coronavirus pandemic.
