In a statement on Thursday, the US Justice Department demanded the confiscation of one billion dollars from an unnamed hacker.
In particular, the Department of Justice is asking the Northern California Court to block “approximately 69370.224.91543 Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Gold (BTG), Bitcoin SV (BSV) and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) received from 1HQ3Go3ggs8pFnXuHVHRytPCq5fGG8Hbh”).
The court document does not identify the identity behind the wallet, but instead refers to it as “Personality X”, but claims that they were able to penetrate the Silk Road and steal the cryptocurrency, which worries Ross Olbrecht. The hacker appears to have already agreed to hand over the money on Monday, which is probably the reason why that money was changed for the first time in five years this week.
The value of this money today makes it the largest cryptocurrency withdrawal in history.
Over the past month, the Department of Justice has become more active in the cryptocurrency space. In early October, the agency launched its anti-cryptocurrency platform, which some have described as calling for serious action.
