Gaming platforms choose side-chain blockchain, cryptocurrency, and non-financial tokens (NFT) in their ecosystem.

Following reports that Valve is banning cryptocurrency and NFT-related games on Steam, the main competitor, the Epic Games Store has shown goodwill towards blockchain developers and the use of cryptocurrency in video games.

Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, said that games that use blockchain technology will be available on the Epic Games Store if developers comply with applicable laws and disclose their terms. According to Sweeney, games should be judged by the age of the group in question, adding:

“While Epic does not use cryptocurrency in its games, we welcome innovation in technology and finance.”
Sweeney told The Verge that when it comes to using NFT in video games, Epic is willing to work with early adopters in the region with some limitations as a platform provider. However, it was previously clarified that Epic Games, as a game developer, has no plans to use NFT in its own products such as Fortnite.

The CEO confirmed that Epic will not support cryptocurrency transactions through the payment service, so developers will have to use a different payment system. The Epic Games Store has no plans to integrate the blockchain into its client anytime soon.

Developed by major video game publisher Epic Games, the Epic Games Store is a platform for purchasing and downloading video games. Launched in 2018, the platform allows users to purchase a digital copy of a video game through a desktop client and then store it in a library to download and play at any time.

Sweeney’s comment came in the wake of the ban on blockchain games on Steam, a well-known digital video game store. Steam’s updated Game Developer Guide states that video games that use blockchain technology are banned and “issued or allowed to exchange cryptocurrencies, or NFTs,” from the digital store.

Game developer SpacePirate stated that “Steam’s view is that merchandise has value, and it does not allow merchandise that could have real value on its platform.”
