TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) started on Monday, Africa’s largest men’s soccer tournament. Meanwhile, Binance announced a formal partnership with the African Football Confederation (CAF) as well as an official sponsorship of the Africa Cup of Nations in 2021, becoming the first cryptocurrency and blockchain sponsor of the event.
Through this sponsorship, Binance will also promote CAF content on social media, which will include daily help, weekly help and tournament help. This content will cover games from five cities in Cameroon in all six locations.
Veron Mosengo-Omba, Secretary General of the African Football Confederation, was pleased to welcome Binance as the official sponsor of this year’s Africa Cup of Nations. Mosengo-Omba expressed optimism that this partnership will “take African football to the next level.”
The Africa Cup of Nations 2021 marks the start of the African sports calendar and lasts until 6 February.
Binance’s partnership with CAF is part of an ongoing commitment to provide financial services to Africans who say they generally have very limited access to banks and other financial institutions. So far, Binance says they have already given over 541,000 Africans access to free cryptocurrency classes.
“Football is the most popular sport in Africa,” said Binance Africa boss Emmanuel Babalola. He said they hoped this sponsorship would “advance our mission to popularize the continent’s cryptocurrency.”
