The legislators’ obsession with bitcoin (BTC) has now reached the Belgian parliament, with Brussels MP Christophe de Beukeler becoming the first European politician to convert his salary into bitcoin.
An MEP’s €5,500 ($6,140.75) monthly salary will be converted into bitcoin using the Bit4You cryptocurrency trading platform, Bruzz reports. Buckler, who represents the Democratic Humanist Center (CDH), hopes his move will inspire other politicians in the region to show the same interest in new technologies.
Buckler cited the example of New York Mayor Eric Adams and how American politicians turn their countries or cities into bitcoin hubs. He said:
“New York Mayor Eric Adams has been collecting his bitcoin salary for three months to turn New York into a bitcoin hub. I don’t think it’s too late for Brussels and Belgium to play a leading role in the crypto industry.”
Miami Mayor Francis X. Suarez is another well-known legislator known for his practice of the BTC law. He has been very vocal about turning the city into a bitcoin hub, and in addition to his own bitcoin salary, he has been working on guidelines to make the same option available to city employees.

Not only politicians, but some of the biggest names in sports have also agreed to accept BTC salaries. A total of seven NFL stars have chosen to pay in bitcoin. Similarly, NBA stars such as Klay Thompson and Andre Iguodala have also announced that they will be paid in bitcoin in the future.
The credibility of sports stars, added as more and more politicians want to be paid in BTC, points to the growing popularity of bitcoin as a resource.
