A decentralized independent organization (DAO) to support the release of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange from prison has collected 12,569 ethers (ETH), or about $ 38.8 million in current prices.

Assange is currently seeking extradition to the United States after a court in December overturned a British court ruling blocking his extradition. He is currently being held in a London prison, where he has been since 2019.

Donations began pouring in on Friday, according to JuiceBox, the community funding platform that runs the campaign. Funding accelerated over the weekend, doubling in the last 24 hours to today’s level.

According to the AssangeDAO Twitter feed, this is now the largest increase in JuiceBox airtime in history, surpassing the DAO Constitution, which raised money in November to buy the original copy of the US Constitution.

The comparison was made on ETH terms, which were much more expensive in November. At the time, the dollar value attracted by the DAO constitution was about $ 49 million.

AssangeDAO is described as a “cypherpunk group” seeking to elevate ETH with JUSTICE Governance Tokens. These will be used to offer a non-fungal set of tokens called Censurship, created by digital artist Buck in collaboration with Julian Assange.

Proceeds from the sale will go to the Assange Defense Fund for “legal expenses and campaigns to raise awareness of the issue of Julian’s extradition.”

AssangeDAO’s origins in the Telegram group began in mid-December, the day the US government won an appeal against a British court ruling that prevented Assange’s extradition. The official website states that “if Assange is extradited to the United States, Assange risks 175 years in prison for publishing truthful information.”

The idea is inspired by FreeRossDAO, which raised $ 12 million to free up Ross Ulbricht, founder of the Silk Road darknet marketplace.
